Karachi (Crime Reporter) The sudden increase in extortion incidents in the city has once again left the business community in a state of severe insecurity. The Karachi Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to its members, directing them to be cautious and take security measures. The letter clearly states that some members of the business community are receiving extortion slips, which pose a serious threat not only to the businessmen but also to the overall peace and order of the city. According to the letter, these extortion slips demand huge amounts of money, which has created severe fear and panic among the business community. In this letter issued by the Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce, all businessmen have been directed to immediately install high-quality CCTV cameras in their business premises and residences, along with proper backup storage facilities. The letter further states that in case of any untoward incident, CCTV footage should be shared with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry so that it can be forwarded to the concerned authorities along with solid evidence. The aim of this move is to enable immediate action against the elements involved in such heinous crimes and ensure their arrest. On the other hand, MQM Pakistan has expressed concern over the increasing incidents of extortion in the city and has written a letter to the Sindh Chief Minister. The growing threats of extortion have alarmed the business community of Karachi, while in this regard, MQM Pakistan’s Deputy Parliamentary Leader Talha Ahmed Khan has written a letter to the Sindh Chief Minister demanding immediate prevention and investigation of these incidents. The letter said that the city’s important traders and industrialists, who are the backbone of the country’s economy, are complaining about receiving notices of alleged extortion. In some cases, bullet shells were also sent along with the notices, which is causing severe fear and panic among the traders and the public. According to the MQM, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has issued a high-alert security advisory to its members and stressed the need for immediate action on security measures. The letter said that these crimes are not only a threat to human lives but can also negatively impact Karachi’s economic development and investment. The letter stressed that despite being announced for years, the Karachi Safe City project has not made any practical progress, which should be taken forward on priority basis in a complete and transparent manner. The MQM has demanded that a high-level task force consisting of Sindh Police, Rangers and intelligence agencies be established to curb extortion incidents, patrolling and surveillance in commercial and industrial areas be increased and a quick response cell along with a helpline for traders be established. The letter further said that immediate legal action should be taken against the arrested accused so that no criminal group gets a concession. MQM Pakistan has assured that it will fully cooperate with all the real steps of the government.
