Sindh government sets new record by collecting more than estimated amount in traffic fines during fiscal year 2024-25

If such large-scale fines are being imposed, then why is traffic flow not improving on city roads? Question from civic circles

Karachi (Report Afzal Khan) The Sindh government has set a new record by collecting more than the estimated amount in the form of traffic fines during the financial year 2024-25. According to official data, the traffic police across the province collected fines worth Rs 1.47 billion during this period, although the revenue from this section was estimated at Rs 1.25 billion at the beginning of the year. Officials say that a target of Rs 1.72 billion has been set for the upcoming financial year 2025-26, which is a significant increase compared to previous years. On the other hand, the opinion of citizens is different in this regard. They say that a large number of traffic challans are issued especially from Karachi, where billions of rupees in the form of fines and offerings have become an additional financial burden on citizens. The question is being raised in urban circles that if such large-scale fines are being levied, then why is the traffic flow on the city’s roads not improving? Nor is there any significant improvement in law enforcement. Public circles are demanding that instead of just imposing fines, attention should also be paid to making the system effective and raising awareness among the public about traffic laws.
